Reading Fluency Practice
The benefit of practicing reading fluency helps students to learn how to phrase sentences correctly, how to change expression, and helps to improve the number of words students read correctly per minute. This will help to improve test scores with DIBELS.
Each week, graphs and stories will be sent home with students so they can practice their reading fluency with another fluent reader (parent, older sibling, etc.).
Monday: The student will read the passage for the first time (COLD READ). The other reader will record the errors and mark the number of words read correctly on the graph. Students will color the graph (in BLUE) to show the number of words read correctly.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: Students and their fluent reader practice the passage using the fluency strategies listed below.
Friday: The student will read the passage again (HOT READ). The other reader will record the errors and mark the number of words read correctly on the graph. Students will then color the graph (in RED) to show the number of words read correctly.
Students will then return the graph to school the following Monday.
Strategies Students Use
Echo Reading: Parents or fluent reader will read one sentence fluently and then students will track back and read the same sentence fluently with proper phrasing and expression.
Reciprocal Reading: Parents or fluent reader and students take turns reading every other word quickly and carefully.
Read Around: Students and fluent reader practice reading the passage one sentence at a time.
Phrasing: In order phrase a paragraph correctly, students need to implement the following strategies:
1. Taping at commas
2. Double tapping at end punctuation (periods, exclamation points, question marks)
3. Dividing the sentence into the who and what (change the emphasis in your voice)
a. Example: Mrs. Laughlin and her class (who) went on a field trip to the literacy festival (what).
b. Example: Bob and his dog (who) took a long walk to the park (what).
